CANVEY Island weathered an early storm to beat Barking on the opening day of their new Bostik North Division campaign.
Gulls keeper Harry Palmer was called into action after less than 30 seconds when captain Steve Sheehan conceded a penalty after a rash tackle on his opposite number Abs Seymour.
But Blues striker Darrell Russell struck a tame effort straight down the middle which Palmer gathered gratefully.
