■ ASHFORD substitute Oli Bate was the match-winner against Hastings United at the Green Box Stadium.
After a sterile opening 20 minutes, the visitors began to ask questions. James Stone headed a 25th-minute Alfie Hilden cross wide and he went even closer, two minutes later, curling a shot against the crossbar.
Two minutes after the interval, Hastings’ Jordan Mase beat Harry Brooks, but the ball flew inches wide of the target.
Before the goal-kick, Ashford introduced Ollie Bate and it proved to be an inspired change.
