League, not Police, sparked fans’ clash

IAN Atkins was completely wrong in suggesting that Dorset Police had not been proactive in getting the date switched for the fateful AFC Bournemouth v Leeds game in 1990 (Fans’ Forum August 23).
They had lobbied the Football League as soon as the fixture list had come out in June, citing the potential for trouble. Unfortunately, despite repeated requests, the FL refused to change the date and the rest as they say is history.
I was there that day ducking for cover as the rocks and bottles rained down on us from the rampaging Leeds mob.
