TRANMERE ROVERS’ loan striker Ben Tomlinson has apologised after he swore at a fan following Saturday’s defeat to Wrexham.

The 26-year-old striker, on loan from last season’s Conference champions Barnet, was part of the Rovers side that lost 4-2 in the FA Trophy at Prenton Park.

Gary Brabin’s side are 12th in the Vanarama National League after a run of just two wins in 13 games and that has led to frustration from both fans and players.

Those frustrations boiled over after the game on Saturday with Tomlinson swearing at a home supporter – something he admits was “the wrong thing to do”.

A statement from Tomlinson read: “At Saturday’s game against Wrexham I swore at a supporter and I would like to apologise unreservedly for doing this.

“Footballers are human beings and when things are not going well for us despite the hard work we are putting in on the training ground we can get just as frustrated as the fans, which is why on Saturday I reacted badly to some criticism from the stands.

“However, I fully accept that it was entirely the wrong thing to do and sets a very bad example, particularly to our younger supporters, and I therefore offer a full and unreserved apology.

“I will also be donating some toys to Tranmere’s Christmas appeal today as a small gesture to make amends.”
