Whitby Town

DARREN WILLIAMS has been sacked by Evo-Stik NPL Premier strugglers Whitby Town following four years as manager.

The former Sunderland player took over at Whitby in in October 2011 from Tommy Cassidy and comfortably kept the Seasiders at Step 3.

It’s been a tough start to this season for the club, however, and Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at Mickleover Sports signalled the end for Williams’ reign. They are 22nd in the league after just three victories in 21 league games.

Williams and assistant Dave Campbell left the Turnbull Ground on Monday with the club hoping to name a caretaker to take charge of the home game against Mickleover on Saturday.

Whitby chairman Graham Manser said: “It was a great shame. Darren is a lovely, lovely man and Dave Campbell has been a loyal servant for over 20 years but the club must come first and the committee felt that only gaining 14 points out of 63 was not good enough.

“The club wishes Daz and Cammy all the best for the future and thanks them for the past. They will always be welcome at the club.”
