RHYS DOLAN has become the latest youngster to progress through the Ilkeston FC academy and into the Football League after signing for League One side Barnsley.

Dolan, 17, is an attacking full-back who played an influential role in the Ilkeston U18s making it through to the FA Youth Cup third round where they lost to Newcastle United.

He was awarded a professional contract with the Robins in September and made four first-team appearances following his debut against Grantham Town in October.

The two clubs have agreed and undisclosed fee for the youngster and Dolan follows in the foosteps of Che Adams, Ashley Hunter, Kieron Wallace and Akil Wright, who all moved into the Football League from the Robins.

Dolan said: “I’m delighted to sign for the club. It’s a very exciting opportunity and I can’t wait to get going.

“I’d like to thank everyone at Ilkeston who have helped me to where I am so far.”

Barnsley boss Lee Johnson added: “It’s great news to have young Rhys on board and it’s also great to see our hard work in recruiting the best young talent out there come to fruition.

“Rhys is a good defender and loves to get forward, he has good potential and we’re looking forward to him working hard under Paul Heckingbottom and Martin Devaney in our U21s.”
