FORMER St Neots Town striker Tom Meechan admits he thought his chances of playing professional football had gone before his move to Newport County.

The 25-year-old has scored 22 times for the Saints in the Evo-Stik League Southern Premier this season and has earned a move to League Two side Newport.

He was on the bench for Saturday’s trip to Exeter City and the former St Ives Town and Godmanchester Rovers striker, who is a qualified maths teacher, wants to keep adding to his tally in the Football League.

“I had thought that maybe it was a little bit too late for me to make the step up to the Football League, but I am delighted to have the chance to make the progression here at Newport County,” Meechan said.

“I’m a striker who likes to score goals and I believe that is my main asset. I like to work hard for the team in and around the box. At the moment I just want to come in and work hard and see where things go from there.”

Newport manager Warren Feeney added: “I know that there were a couple of clubs chasing Tom, and we are delighted to have him here.

“It is a great chance for Tom, coming into a professional environment and we have all seen his impressive goal scoring record.

“Our job is now to get Tom up to speed with the level of football in the Football League, which he will achieve by working hard and surrounding himself by the good players that we have in this squad.

“I have been impressed with Tom’s desire to play in the Football League and hopefully he can take this great opportunity to make a name for himself.”
