Lancaster City legend Neil Marshall passes away aged 31 after battle with cancer

LANCASTER CITY are in mourning after club legend Neil Marshall passed away on Wednesday following a long battle with cancer.

Defender Marshall served as the Dolly Blues’ captain over a ten-year spell at the Giant Axe and became a big fans’ favourite with his whole-hearted displays.

The 31-year-old retired at the end of last season to spend more time with his family having battled cancer on and off for five years.

Marshall was told he could have no more surgery on his groin and was put on tablets to manage his condition. However, the club announced on Wednesday that their former player had passed away.

The father of two, who was a plumber by trade, lived yards from City’s Giant Axe ground and he will be greatly missed by all at the Dolly Blues.

A Lancaster statement said: “Our heartfelt sympathies go to his wife Kim, son Max and daughter Daisy for their devastating loss, also to Tony and Kath on the tragic loss of their son.

“This has come as a great shock to us all, so difficult to comprehend the death of one so young. God bless you Neil. You will never be forgotten.”

Former Lancaster and current Morecambe player Alex Kenyon tweeted: “Absolutely gutted to hear the news about Neil Marshall. Rest in peace mate! Thank you so much for everything!”
