WELSH Premier League champions The New Saints could be set for even more celebration if they beat Cefn Druids on Boxing Day.

The Saints have won five league titles in a row and are set to claim their sixth straight championship, having won all 19 league games so far this season.

They have already beaten Bangor City’s record of consecutive Welsh Premier wins and a victory against Cefn Druids would see them extend their run to 26 wins in a row.

That would see them equal a 44-year world record set by an Ajax team that included the legendary Johan Cruyff and Johann Neeskens.

The Oswestry-based club could match the record on Boxing Day and victory against Druids on Friday, December 30 would see them recognised by Guinness World Records.

Saints’ last defeat came in July when they beaten by Cypriot giants Apoel Nicosia in the Champions League.

Boss Craig Harrison told the Welsh Premier website: “It’d be quite a record to equal, if we can do it!

“To be in this position is incredible, especially considering at the start of the season everyone was predicting that this would be the toughest season that we could ever have, so to even be in with a shout of equalling this record at this stage of the season is incredible within itself.

“We’re in a great position, you would never, ever have predicted this – even though I was very confident in what we had to work with at the start of the season – but to be where we are now, 21 points ahead, 68 goals in 19 games, conceding 11, and to have an opportunity to equal, and possibly within another week break the world record of consecutive games won, no chance we’d have expected anything like this at the start of the season!

“Our aim has always been to win the league, we’ve had that game plan and an objective since day one to win the league. It’s just something that if you start looking past the next game then certainly with the high standard of this Welsh Premier League, then you’re going to come unstuck and get beat.”
