Semi-professional players have an incredible opportunity to represent Great Britain at the European Maccabi Games in Budapest in July 2019.
The football management team of Maccabi Great Britain (the national Jewish sporting body) are on the lookout for players currently competing at non-league Step 7 or higher in order to add to an already successful, young squad; who have a good chance to claim a gold medal in Hungary next summer.
Andy Landesberg, manager for the Great Britain football side said: ‘The games are held every four years and it’s an incredible experience to wear the national shirt at an international sporting event where dozens of nations compete across a range of sports. I would recommend this to anyone who looks to represent their country and Community as we’d certainly like to talk to them.
Having won an historic silver medal at the 2017 World Maccabiah Games, the management have been appointed go one better at the Euro’s next summer in Budapest, and again at the next World Games in 2021 held in Israel.
‘We can promise professional level facilities and preparation – last summer we had the likes of Kevin Blackwell (Cardiff City Assistant manager) as our coach and Gary Lewin as our head of medical, along with Darren Stern, who is Lead Sports Scientist at Millwall FC. Anyone who takes part will learn and gain great experience as a result; a couple of the boys even had the chance to turn pro on the back of it.’
Hayes and Yeading skipper Tom Smith played for GB last summer. Smith was even approached by Beitar Jerusalem at the end of the tournament, having had a stand-out role for GB. He said ‘It was without doubt the best football experience of my life. It was really tough competition, but getting to the final was unbelievable. The quality of the build-up and our team ethic was fantastic. It has certainly made me a better player’.
