ATHERTON Collieries reached their highest ever league position in 102 years as they went top of the table with a 1-0 win at Leek Town.
The Colls got off to the perfect start when Tom Bentham curled the ball into the far corner from the edge of the box after good hold-up play from Jordan Carver.
Leek steadied the ship, almost equalising on the stroke of half-time after a mazy run by Robert Stevenson, while Ben Harcastle blazed over for the visitors.
The second period saw much of the same with both defences standing resolute.
