I READ with with interest Alex Narey’s editorial on the lack of proper defending in the modern game (NLP, June 9).
As a result, we now have full-backs who can’t stop a cross, centre-halves who can’t head the ball and players who dont track runners.
The players mentioned, Jim Bentley and Ray Warburton, are fine examples of players doing the job. Both were in the mould of the great Jack Charlton, who was typically no-nonsense in his approach.
