The 36-year-old ex-Barnsley and Panathinaikos keeper has joined the National League promotion chasers on a short-term deal with regular keeper Sam Slocombe suffering a groin injury.

Steele, capped by England at Under 18, 19 and 20s, has turned out for a number of Football League clubs including County’s city rivals Nottingham Forest.

He linked up with Stamford in December before the Daniels’ season was curtailed.

Burchnall said: “Luke’s had an unbelievable career and people speak extremely highly of him.

“We’ve had to act really quickly. It’s not an easy market to pick someone up in but I think we’ve done really well to bring him in.”
