The 30-year-old, who notched up 169 appearances for the Blues in five years, rejected a new contract with the Shrimpers and will now remain in the EFL after joining Simon Weaver’s League Two outfit.

“I’m delighted,” said the Sheffield-born former Hibs keeper. “The move was a no-brainer for me having seen how well the club did last year (Town finished 17th in the fourth tier in their debut season in the EFL) and the progression they have made over the last few years. It’s something I wanted to be a part of.”

Southend said: “We would like to thank Mark for his efforts during his time with us and wish him the very best for the future.”
