WYTHENSHAWE Town say they have been left devastated by the passing of their striker Sam Jones.

Tributes have been paid to the 28-year-old goalscorer from across the Non-League game.

The North West Counties Premier side tweeted the heartbreaking news on Monday.

“We are absolutely devastated to share the news that our centre-forward, Sam Jones, has passed away,” the club said. “We have no words. One of our own.”

Town decided to go ahead with their opening league fixture against Ashton Athletic yesterday following a team meeting.

Jones’ former club East Manchester said: “A true gent and someone who the football world will miss! Was a joy to watch him one last time last weekend! RIP Sam!”

Dom Doyle, another of his ex-clubs, said: “We’re all absolutely heartbroken to announce that we’ve lost one of our boys, Sam Jones.

“Amazing footballer, lovely lad and good friend to so many people. Our thoughts are now with Sam’s family and friends. Rest in peace young man. You’ll never be forgotten.”

Denton Town joint-manager Phill Cooper added: “Was a privilege to share the pitch with such a top, top lad and an even better player! Made players like me look good! Gone but never forgotten!”
