LANCASTER City needed Brandon Lonsdale’s stoppage-time strike to seal their passage to the next round.
Trinity were slow to get out of the traps, but had the first real effort on goal when Bradley Grayson forced a good save from Dolly Blues keeper Aidan Dowling at his near post.
However, the visitors led on eight minutes, when Sam Bailey found time and space to deliver from the right and Paul Dawson’s free-header gave Gainsborough goalie Matt Yates no chance.
