HEROIC efforts by the Winchester staff and players to complete the opening league game of the season were in vain as the match was abandoned early in the second half.
A torrential downpour at the interval created plenty of surface water, and although the referee started the half, conditions were such that after just a few minutes play he ordered a further delay of 15 minutes to allow some of the water to be cleared from the pitch.
