Newcastle Blue Star came from two down to draw 3-3 at home to Whitley Bay, Mechack Kanda both hero and villain for Bay.
Kanda put the Seahorses 3-2 ahead on 81 minutes from a corner but then slid a cross into his own net three minutes into injury time.
Northallerton Town were the big winners on the opening day, beating Crook Town 4-1 in North Yorkshire. Northallerton were four-up just past the hour, James Sayer scoring a brace.
Boro Rangers also scored four in a 4-2 win against second division champions Horden CW for whom Jack Pounder scored in each half.
