ST ALBANS won this battle of two clubs relegated at the end of last season thanks to a late Jasper Mather goal.
From the outset, the hosts played purposefully but found the Saints defence stubborn. The visitors were content to sit back for the opening quarter of an hour.
Saints came close to scoring from two corners and Hitchin had good cause to rue their narrow misses as the half progressed.
