Paul Hurst made a remarkable return to Boston United on Wednesday after the club sacked Graham Coughlan, with the Pilgrims hovering just above the National League relegation zone.
More than 15 years ago, the 51-year-old achieved promotion with Boston up into the National League North alongside former Rotherham United team-mate Rob Scott.
Hurst left York Street with the Pilgrims sitting second in the table and well placed for promotion to take charge of Grimsby Town in the National League alongside Scott.
He later assumed sole control and guided the Mariners back into the Football League in 2016.

Significant moment
The Englishman went on to manage Shrewsbury Town, Ipswich Town and Scunthorpe United, before a second stint at Grimsby.
He secured yet another promotion to the EFL at the first attempt following the club’s relegation from League Two in 2021.
After more than a year away from management, he returns to the National League outfit currently occupying 17th, three points above the relegation zone and without a win in six games – a run that led the club to sack Graham Coughlan after two years in charge, despite last season’s great escape from relegation.
Chairman David Newton welcomed Hurst’s return.
“We are delighted that Paul has agreed to re-join Boston United,” Newton said. “We enjoyed great success during his previous spell at the club, along with Rob Scott, which led to a very successful period for Paul – and I was delighted to see him rise to managing in the Championship.”

Drew a line under
Newton also addressed the circumstances surrounding Hurst’s departure in 2011.
“I am sure some will point to the way Rob and Paul departed the club back then,” he said. “I had no issue with their ambition to manage at a higher level, but I did not feel it was done in the correct manner.
“The matter was dealt with at the time – and the club received the right compensation for their move.
“That drew a line under things for me, and I was delighted when Paul continued to bring teams over for pre-season fixtures, and we have kept in touch ever since.”

New chapter
Boston confirmed that Hurst will work alongside long-time assistant Chris Doig. The pair will take charge of Saturday’s National League trip to FC Halifax Town.
The club also confirmed the departure of assistant manager Lee Bullen following the appointments.
“I am delighted that Chris Doig has agreed to join Paul once again, which completes a very successful management team,” Newton added. “Sadly, that does mean we have had to part company with Lee Bullen.
“It has been an absolute pleasure having Lee at our club. He is an excellent coach and a top man with strong values.
“He leaves with our sincere thanks and best wishes for the future.
“This is a key appointment as we look to cement our place in the National League and build going forward.
“The support home and away has been outstanding. I am sure everyone will pull together as we move into this new chapter.”
