Torquay United supporters have seen glimpses of brilliance, and many believe the best is still yet to come from Louis Dennis, who has delivered a handful of standout performances and contributed plenty of goals so far this season.

Dennis has scored 13 goals in 25 appearances so far for National League South side Torquay, who currently sit at the top of the table with 56 points.

After playoff heartbreak last year, they are now aiming to challenge for the league title, alongside Dorking Wanderers, in pursuit of a return to the National League after a three-year absence.

Dennis has a wealth of experience across the National League, having made most of those appearances for current League Two Leaders Bromley, for whom he scored 42 goals across his two spells and made 201 appearances, the majority of which came within their time as a fifth-tier club, including their playoff final victory against Solihull Moors.

Experience

Beyond statistics, his experience provides leadership and composure to any team, earning respect from teammates and managers alike.

Whether leading the attack or guiding younger players, Dennis’s presence offers tactical adaptability and a winning mindset to the teams he joins.

A crucial part of Dennis’s success this season is his partnership with fellow Gulls forward Jordan Young, having scored a combined 28 goals in United’s promotion push this season.

Hit the ground running

With 17 games left to go of the season, there is a strong chance that both Dennis and Young could write themselves into Torquay folklore.

Tonight, Dennis returns from a three-match suspension for the Gulls’ away fixture against Chippenham Town, which the home side confirmed would go ahead following a pitch inspection, bringing his renewed goalscoring energy to the squad.

He will want to hit the ground running, and on paper, tonight’s match against the Bluebirds is the ideal opportunity.

If he maintains his current form, Dennis could prove to be the key player in Torquay’s pursuit of promotion out of the National League South.

Wotton bags top prize

Ahead of tonight’s game, Torquay boss Paul Wotton has been named National League South Manager of the Month for January.

Wotton guided the Gulls through an impressive run last month, winning four of their five league games as they surged to the top of the table.

Torquay also won three straight away matches, including a standout 2-1 victory at then-leaders Hornchurch, where they came from behind after the break to claim all three points.

The Gulls now sit three points clear at the summit, although second-placed Dorking and third-placed Hornchurch both have a game in hand, with neither able to match Torquay’s goal difference.

Wotton beat off competition from Dorking boss Marc White, Hemel Hempstead Town manager Lee Allinson and Chesham United co-bosses James Duncan and Michael Murray.
