After another whirlwind of midweek National League action, the fights for the title and to survive in the fifth tier have become ever fiercer ahead of a full schedule of weekend action.
League leaders Rochdale suffered a 3-2 away defeat to promotion contenders Southend United, with Jimmy McNulty’s side unable to take advantage of their remaining game in hand.
With the gap between the Dale and York City just two points, there are now just eight games remaining in what could be the greatest National League title race of all time.
Gateshead and Brackley Town both picked up valuable points in the battle to avoid the drop, and there are now just four points separating four teams heading into the weekend.
In what promises to be another pivotal round of games in the fifth tier, here is a closer look at what is on offer.

Woking vs Aldershot Town
Kick off at 12.30pm GMT on Saturday, March 21st 2026 (Live on DAZN)
Aldershot Town will be striving to end a run of four successive defeats when they travel to mid-table Woking as they slide towards the relegation zone.
John Coleman has done a stellar job since taking over as Shots manager, but recent results mean that they now sit four places and five points above the bottom four.
However, given that Aldershot have played four of the top six in their last four, their run of defeats should not cause too much concern.
While Woking technically have nothing to play for, their run of form suggests that they will provide a stern test at the Laithwaite Community Stadium.
The Cards are unbeaten in their last five, occupying 10th position, and will be aiming to accumulate as many points as possible between now and the end of the campaign.

Altrincham vs Southend United
Kick off at 3pm GMT on Saturday, March 21st 2026
Southend are flying high after their triumph over league leaders Rochdale in midweek, but must now focus on ensuring their play-off position.
Kevin Maher’s side defeated the Dale 3-2 on Wednesday night, inflicting the first defeat on McNulty’s men in 2026 and opening the door to York.
The Shrimpers are unbeaten in their last five and are looking like strong candidates for the top seven due to their two-point cushion over FC Halifax Town and two games in hand.
As for Altrincham, they still have work to do if they are to ensure their National League status, with several teams at the bottom finding form at just the right time.
The Robins were downed by Alfie Beestin’s late winner for Scunthorpe United last weekend and have a six-point advantage on the relegation zone, while they also have a game in hand.
Boreham Wood vs Gateshead
Kick off at 3pm GMT on Saturday, March 21st 2026
Boreham Wood are riding high after defeating West Ham United’s under-21s on penalties in the National League Cup final on Tuesday night.
However, Luke Garrard’s focus will now be on catching third-place Carlisle United to ensure they avoid a play-off eliminator at the end of April.
Their opponents, Gateshead, have been on an extraordinary run of form that has seen them go from relegation certainties to genuine survival contenders.
Rob Elliot’s men beat in-form Wealdstone 1-0 in midweek, meaning that they are now level on points with Barckley and are only in the drop zone on goal difference.
When Boreham Wood play, there is usually a glut of goals, so this one could be the clash of the National League this weekend.

Braintree Town vs Scuthorpe United
Kick off at 3pm GMT on Saturday, March 21st 2026
With Braintree Town chasing survival and Scunthorpe United eyeing promotion, plenty is riding on this National League encounter.
Steve Pitt’s side scored a late, late equaliser to draw with fellow strugglers Morecambe last weekend and remain level on points with the Shrimps.
The Essex club is without a win in their last three and are now three points adrift of safety heading towards the end of the season.
Scunthorpe defeated bottom side Truro City 2-1 in midweek to cement their place in the play-off positions and will be striving to catch Carlisle in third.
Andy Butler’s men have an 11-point cushion on Halifax Town in eighth but must finish in the top three if they want to avoid a play-off eliminator at the end of April.
Carlisle United vs Boston United
Kick off at 3pm GMT on Saturday, March 21st 2026
Carlisle will be aiming to bounce back when they host mid-table Boston United in the National League this weekend.
Mark Hughes’ side suffered a shock defeat to Tamworth last Saturday, but with Boreham Wood also losing, the loss was not too damaging.
The Cumbrians occupy third place in the table, and they will need to maintain their position if they are to swerve the dreaded play-off eliminator at the end of April.
Boston came from behind to beat Yeovil Town 2-1 last weekend to ensure a first win in three and give themselves a 10-point cushion on the relegation zone.
While the Pilgrims are not mathematically safe just yet, they would have to go some to get dragged into a relegation dogfight.
Rochdale vs Tamworth
Kick off at 3pm GMT on Saturday, March 21st 2026
Rochdale will be desperate to return to winning ways when they face Tamworth after Southend inflicted a dagger blow to the heart of their National League title ambitions.
The Dale were beaten 3-2 by the Shrimpers in midweek, meaning that they no longer have any games in hand on York, who are just two points behind them.
Despite suffering their first defeat of 2026, McNulty’s side have their fate in their own hands, but ironically face the Minstermen on the last day of the season.
As for Tamworth, they are too far off the play-offs and the relegation zone to have anything to play for, but will still be aiming to end the campaign strongly.
The Lambs came from behind to stun Carlisle last weekend to end a run of three straight defeats and climb to 12th in the process.

York City vs Brackley Town
Kick off at 3pm GMT on Saturday, March 21st 2026
York are licking their lips after Rochdale’s slip-up in midweek, with the door well and truly open for the Minstermen to catch them in the National League.
Stuart Maynard’s men were not in action in midweek but would have been paying close attention as the Dale were beaten 3-2 by Southend – their first loss of 2026.
The Minstermen defeated Aldershot Town 3-0 last weekend and have eight games to catch their rivals, who they play in the final game of the campaign.
Ten-man Brackley came from behind to earn a point against Solihull Moors on Tuesday night, but have serious cause for concern as the teams below them continue to notch points.
The Saints are without a win in their last eight matches and are outside the relegation zone by only goal difference, with Gateshead hot on their heels.
Solihull Moors vs FC Halifax Town
Kick off at 5.30pm GMT on Saturday, March 21st 2026
With Solihull needing to ensure survival and Halifax chasing a play-off place, this encounter has the makings to be a corker at the ARMCO Arena.
Chris Millington’s side were held by a resilient 10-man Brackley in midweek, stretching their winless run to eight.
While the Moors have a seven-point cushion on the relegation zone, they have been dropping points to teams at the bottom and are at serious risk of being dragged in.
Halifax have an outside chance of reaching the play-offs, but with plenty to play for, they can take advantage if the teams above them drop points.
The Shaymen scored late to secure a statement 3-2 win over Boreham Wood last Saturday and sit two points behind Southend in seventh, although they have played two games more.
