Mixed emotions for Gateshead keeper Jameson after Harrogate Town goal

‘That’s how crazy football is’ may well be the understatement of the century as Gateshead goalkeeper Pete Jameson reflects on his goalscoring exploits in Monday’s defeat at National League rivals Harrogate Town.

At 33-years-old and with over 350 EFL, National League and National League North appearances behind him, you might expect the experienced stopper had witnessed everything throughout his career.

Yet even he was surprised when his long clearance deceived Harrogate counterpart Rory Watson before nestling in the back of the net to give the Heed a surprise lead at EnviroVent Stadium on Bank Holiday Monday.

The unexpected appearance on the scoresheet came against one of Jameson’s former clubs – and he admitted only falling to a late defeat took some of the shine away from a moment that he will pass down the generations.

He told The NLP: “It was an amazing feeling and one to tell the kids and Grandchildren when I’m older – but it was disappointing not to get the win. Sometimes things happen for a reason, don’t they? But there is no bad blood or anything like that, there’s some great people at Harrogate and I loved my time there – but I just wanted the win and especially after going in front.

“I was actually disappointed with the kick because I hit it too central and I though it was going to go into the keeper’s hands when I wanted it to go a bit wider – but that’s how crazy football is.”

‘The positivity is there’

The defeat against Harrogate was the third consecutive loss suffered by Lee Cattermole’s side after they had claimed a deserved home win against Woking in their first home game of the campaign.

The Heed are back on home soil on Saturday and will hope to return to winning ways when they face bottom of the table Solihull Moors. Despite their visitors’ challenging start to the campaign, Jameson insisted his side will only come out on top if they focus on themselves during their preparations for the game.

“There’s positivity and I’ve always said we have a fantastic dressing room. We are pulling in the same direction, we all want the same thing and we want the team and the club to do well. That positivity is there but we all know it’s a result business and that’s what matters.

“We will prepare right this week. I think we know Solihull’s strengths, they’ll want to come here, have a go and get points on the board to help them. All we can do is focus on ourselves and make sure we prepare right for the game.”
