DAVE TARPEY helped Maidenhead United remain top of the table on Saturday while also writing himself into the National League South record books.

The 28-year-old striker has been on fire this season and added another two at the weekend to take his league total this campaign to 35.

His first against Weston-super-Mare equalled the National League South record before he broke it with his second goal late on.

Tarpey has now surpassed the previous record of 34 in a season which was achieved in 2010-11 by then-Dover Athletic forward Adam Birchall.

His goals fired Maidenhead to another three points which keep the Magpies one point clear of second-placed Ebbsfleet United with nine games left.

Tarpey now has 37 goals in all competitions and will be looking to surpass the 40 scored by Maidenhead’s Peter Lowen in 1961-62.

“It’s a great achievement personally, but the team is more important,” Tarpey told BBC Radio Berkshire. “Three points is all that matters currently.

“It’s nice to break the goal-scoring record, but the main focus is keeping us top and hopefully getting promoted.

“We’ve just got to expect Ebbsfleet will keep winning games and we’ve just got to go into every game knowing that if we keep winning, we’ll win the league.”
