Ambitious Step 5 Club Greenwich Hope To Lure Edgar Davids

GREENWICH BOROUGH say they are deadly serious about Edgar Davids joining their quest for Southern Counties East glory – and have already spoken to the Dutch mega star six times.

The 41-year-old is in talks with the tiny Kent club about a partnership that could see him turn out for the Step 5 side and promote his  Schools.

Davids left his role as player-manager at Conference Premier in January after 15 controversial months in charge.

After being sent off for the third time last season at City in December, the former Juventus midfielder retired – but Greenwich chairman Perry Skinner is confident of twisting his arm.

He told The : “Edgar was due back from Brazil over the weekend but because the Netherlands have done so well he has been asked to stay on and do some more commentary.

“I have been on the phone to him a lot and we've been discussing ideas. We're talking and he is keen – we're confident and we're going to have a sit-down meeting when he gets back to hopefully finalise our plans.

“I would say we're 70 per cent sure he'll come on board. I think it you would have said there is a good chance of Edgar Davids playing for Greenwich Borough a few years ago they would have said you were mad!”

Ambitious Greenwich, where Ian Wright played before getting his professional chance, have a five-year plan to be playing Conference back in the borough.

They are groundsharing at 's Princes Park while they await news of their £50m stadium plan which they hope we see them return in a new 6,000 ground.

Skinner, whose brother David is their president and has promised to bankroll the club through the leagues, added: “If we can get a player of his stature to be associated with us it will be astronomical.

“We can accommodate his needs but I don't think this is about money. He wasn't paid by Barnet but now its about getting him through our doors. It's not pie in the sky – it's a serious possibility.”
