Reds Set To Lose Their Skipper

WORKINGTON captain Jonny Wright has confirmed that he will leave the club after five games of the new season.

Wright took over as Reds skipper last month but has now decided to quit the Borough Park club to move to London and further his career outside of football.

The news couldn’t have come at a much worse time, with Workington set to kick off their Conference North campaign at AFC Telford United tomorrow.

Speaking about his planned departure, the 27-year-old told the News & Star: “I have five games now to make sure I go out with a bang.

“The fans have always been amazing to me. They have stood by me, and supported me, so I owe it to them to leave Workington in the best position I can.

“The core group who go to every game are some of the best fans in the world. Their loyalty is admirable, and hearing them on the terraces in the freezing wind and rain on a Tuesday night has lifted me.

“I’m not going for the money. I’m leaving to better my career away from football, and to be closer to my girlfriend Kate. I hope the fans and the club understand that it’s a personal choice I’ve had to make.”

During his time with Workington, Wirght has made over 250 appearances, scoring 73 times.
