Why Cheltenham Town are well on their way to the National League title

With just twelve matches remaining, Cheltenham hold a slender four-point lead over nearest rivals Forest Green Rovers at the top of the National League table.

With just nine matches remaining, Cheltenham hold a slender two-point lead over nearest rivals Forest Green Rovers at the top of the National League table. It’s now just a two-horse race for the title and the only automatic promotion spot, and the runner up will need to navigate the play-offs to secure their place in the Football League.

For the most part, Gary Johnson’s side have been by far the best team in the National League and deserve to be at the summit of the division. The Robins have lost just three matches all season and continued their fine form with a 1-0 victory at Tranmere Rovers two weeks ago. In fact, they’ve been on a phenomenal run and the momentum and confidence is certainly with Cheltenham on current form.

Since drawing to Eastleigh in October, Cheltenham have won 14 of their last 19 league games – an incredible achievement. In fact, victory against Tranmere ensured a new club record of 21 matches without defeat. They’ve already played Forest Green twice and Rovers will need some help from other clubs if they are to pip Cheltenham to the crown. At the time of writing, Johnson’s men are 2/11 with Betway to win the title while Forest Green are 7/2.

Ultimately, Cheltenham are just too good for the fifth tier of English football. After dropping out of the Football League for the first time in 16 years last season, many believed they would struggle to bounce back at the first time of asking but they have continued to defy the odds throughout the campaign. It’s hard to picture Johnson’s side throwing their current advantage away and punters should take the odds now: in fact, why not register at Betway’s betting site today?

Can they do it? Well, it would take a brave man to back against Cheltenham now. With a relatively easy run-in, the Robins could secure the title before the end of the campaign – especially if Forest Green continue to trip up against the division’s lesser sides. Their closest rivals for the crown are also in great form but with potentially tricky clashes with play-off candidates Gateshead and Tranmere Rovers, Forest Green’s main test is yet to come….
