Then in 2002 he surprised the audience by rejecting the contract with DC United in the United States after a successful trial. What was really unexpected was his move to the League Two side Boston United two years later. After his decision in July 2004, Paul commented that it was a great chance for him to become a great coach and manager. Nonetheless, after only five appearances during three months, Gascoigne quit, citing purely professional reasons.

Today we finally know the truth: the whole story of signing for the Pilgrims was nothing but a huge mistake. Paul admits that his time at Boston United was a nightmare. When he got a call with an offer ‘from Boston’, he simply didn’t know about the Lincolnshire team. Thus, Gascoigne thought of the city in the USA and agreed immediately. When he found out the truth, though, it was too late to cancel anything, so he stayed in for three months.

The revelation of this incident is the latest, but definitely not the only one in Gascoigne’s 20-year-long career. At the moment, Paul is awaiting trial on a racially aggravated public order offense. Back in June, he was accused of using offensive words and behaving abusively during his show An Audience With Paul Gascoigne in Wolverhampton. Also, Gascoigne has a pretty noticeable history of alcohol-related problems.
