Canvey Island went two points clear at the top of the Bostik North Division with a stunning victory at Tilbury, as AFC Hornchurch were held to a frustrating 2-2 draw at Grays Athletic.
Braces from Mitchell Gilbey and Sam Collins, plus solitary strikes from Eliott Warren and Ryan Charles, helped Canvey seal an emphatic 6-2 win on the road to move onto 24 points – two clear of nearest challengers Hornchurch.
Jimmy McFarlane’s men had to settle for a point at Grays, and their night was made worse as Bowers & Pitsea moved level on points with them following their comfortable win 2-0 at Witham Town.
In a tight promotion chase, Haringey Borough also moved level with the Urchins, and Pitsea, after they beat Barking 2-1 in a fiery encounter at Mayesbrook Park.
Ware kept up their play-off aspirations with an exciting 3-1 win against Cheshunt, with Yannick Kamanan scoring two to seal the maximum points, and sixth place Bury Town held on to beat Hertford 4-2, despite a late onslaught.
Maldon & Tiptree also have promotion dreams, but were held to a 1-1 draw on the road as ten-man AFC Sudbury held on to claim a point.
Further down the division, Brentwood Town produced a good performance to beat Potters Bar Town, while bottom club Norwich United were dealt another blow after Soham Town Rangers comfortable beat them 3-0 on home soil.
