South East side Cambridge City have been handed a huge boost with the news their plans for a new stadium have finally been approved.
For the second time, the planning committee of South Cambridgeshire District Council has voted in favour by eight votes to two to approve an application for a new stadium to be built for the Lilywhites, with the site also including a community facility.
The first application for a new stadium to be built on a former landfill site in Sawston was accepted in 2014, but later turned down in May 2016 following a late rejection from a local resident.
The club appealed the rejection in February, but the Court of Appeal upheld the decision and officers were recommended the plans be refused in today's meeting.
Nevertheless, councillors chose to overrule those recommendations, arguing the benefits of the 3,000-capacity stadium, which will also have a floodlit grass pitch, full-sized training pitch and 500 parking spaces, outweighed the negative impacts.
