The blankets of snow that have struck the UK may have caused fixture casualties and a lack of feeling in fingers and toes over the weekend but, with temperatures not rising anytime soon for this week, clubs are calling for volunteers to take action.
While Heathrow stays crowded with stranded winter holidaymakers, clubs are calling on fans for help in clear snow off their pitches, grit the car parks and pathways and alternative areas to train.
's match risked being called off at one stage of their tie against on Saturday, only for players, staff and fans to cobble together to clear the snow sufficiently for the 90 minutes to be played out and the Silkmen earn a 4-1 victory over their promotion rivals.
Town manager John Askey shared his gratitude to those who helped, saying after the match: “Everyone who contributed on the day – it's a reward to them really. For them to come out in the freezing cold at 6am pulling off sheets and clearing snow, I'm just pleased for them – I'd like to thank everybody who's contributed.”
And now with midweek fixtures to be played, clubs are working to keep the pitch protected from the damp of the snow and the frozen ground that follows.
