Eastwood Town’s 2009 Northern Premier League championship team will reunite on Sunday to support the wife of former Badgers’ striker Marc Smith.
A charity match is being held to raise money for Sheffield’s Weston Park Hospital, who are treating Smith’s wife Shelley after she was diagnosed with incurable cervical cancer.
Smith, who had to spells with the club, will be joined by former team-mates Chris Shaw, Peter Knox, Andy Todd and Lindon Meikle among others to take on Clifton All Stars.
Former Derby County defender Michael Johnson will play for their opponents as well as ex-Norwich City striker Darren Huckerby.
Entry is £5 for the 1.30pm kick-off at the Norman Archer Memorial Ground, Green Lane, Clifton. An auction will be held after.
“It’s tough, it really is – you can’t explain it,” Smith, who also played for Harrogate Town, Guiseley and Armthorpe Welfare, said. “You just try to do the best you can supporting my wife and three kids.
“Weston Park Cancer Hospital in Sheffield are doing a great job. I go with my wife when she has chemotherapy and the work the nurses do under great pressure is absolutely brilliant – my wife wouldn’t be here now without them.
“It will be a good occasion. We’re having an auction afterwards with lots of signed shirts, footballs and football boots. Hopefully on the day people put their hands in their pockets and start bidding.”
