Martin Carruthers

Basford United have announced the departure of manager Martin Carruthers and his assistant Mark Clifford.

The Nottingham based club slipped to ninth place in the Northern Premier League after falling to an emphatic 4-1 defeat at Whitby Town at the weekend, which left them ten points adrift of the play-off positions.
Carruthers stepped into the managerial hotseat at  Greenwich Avenue back in 2013 and guided the club to two promotions, eventually reaching Step 3 last season.
Basford have endured a topsy turvey campaign this year, netting 70 goals in the league but also conceding a worrying 61 times, giving them the third worst defensive record in the NPL.
In a statement on the club’s official website, Chairman Chris Munroe commented, “I would like to personally thank Martin and Mark for their tireless and excellent contribution to the club. Two promotions and numerous cup successes in five years is a fabulous testament to them. I wish them all the very best.
“Both can leave with heads held high having done the job they were asked to do.
“The club have taken this tough decision to bring about a change of direction and implement a new structure that will better fit our objectives of continual progression.”
