This week, Developing Goalkeeping UK speaks to Aldershot keeper Jake Cole who has played well over 300 matches at pro and semi pro level.
What has been the highlight of your Non-League playing career?
Jake Cole: The highlight must have been winning the fans and also the players’ award for best player of the year at Aldershot. It was a real pleasure to be recognised from both the fans and also the players to have played such a big role in the team.
What part of goalkeeping has changed that has forced you to adapt to your game over the years?
JC: For me I would say being more comfortable with the ball at my feet/playing out from the back.
As you are all aware the back pass rule has changed goalkeeping so much and the older generation has had to adapt as the game continues to evolve.
Do you think goalkeeping has come a long way since you started playing and have you seen the position chang massively?
JC: I wouldn’t say massively as the basics for the goalkeeper are still all there, however distribution has become even more important and I feel now teams are asking more of the goalkeeper instead of just kicking it up the pitch.
Goalkeeping tip of the week from Develop Goalkeeping UK’s Martin Brennan:
The role of a goalkeeper I believe has changed a fair bit as distribution has become a main factor of the goalkeeper’s game.
Goalkeepers are now expected to throw the ball, short, medium and long range pas, set up counter attacks with a side volley.
So the goalkeepers are now spending so much more time on this and we are slowly becoming outfield players with gloves on.
I always remember a Premier League telling me that once after he had been dropped after the cub went to buy another goalkeeper who could do all the ranges of passes.”
I would highly recommend you work on all your range of passes and also work on that weaker foot as well.
