Macclesfield FC boss Danny Whitaker makes himself the club’s first signing

MACCLESFIELD FC have unveiled their first ever new signing – the manager himself !

The phoenix club are preparing for their historic first season in the next season after being resurrected in the wake of 's sad demise last summer.

The first move of new owner Rob Smethurst and director of Robbie Savage was to install Silkmen legend Danny Whitaker as manager after announcing he had hung up his boots at the age of 40.

Now though, Whitaker has agreed to come out of retirement and lead the club from the front, in a player-manager role.

Whitaker, nicknamed the Magic Man by the Lancashire club, played over 400 games in 11 years for Town, over two separate spells, helping the club win promotion to the Football League in 2017-18.

The club said: “When we considered who to release as our prestigious first player, we wanted someone who exemplified everything about our club.

“Someone who we know will run through brick walls for us each and every week; someone who has blue blood running through their veins and someone who is unwavering in his passion for the fight ahead.

“Nobody fits the bill more than our Magic Man, Danny Whitaker, and as such, we are delighted to announce that he has agreed to come out of retirement to orchestrate our midfield in a manner that only he can.”

Whitaker added: “It's fantastic for me, because everyone knows that I love this club and love playing football!

“Everyone that has played will tell you that you can't beat the feeling of being out on the pitch.

“I will be helping the team as a whole and helping the players – it's going to be fantastic.”
