Mark Harris: Protect our volunteers!

Like it or not, Non-League football is no longer a matter of kicking a ball round for 90 minutes on a Saturday afternoon. We rely on volunteers to do the jobs that enable clubs to stage matches.

From rule changes to well-intentioned crowdfunding, football is full of unintended consequences.
In last week’s column, I argued for greater regulation of financial management at club level to prevent clubs’ ambitions outstripping their ability to fund those ambitions. However sensible this might be, we cannot ignore their unintended consequences, such as the impact on volunteers’ goodwill.
