DALE PEARSON’S early strike, his first for his new club, was all that separated these near-neighbours.
Hesitation between home captain Michael Scott and teenage goalkeeper Mauro Asikaogu proved fatal just nine minutes in.
Experienced frontman Pearson nipped in to lob the onrushing Asikaogu from the edge of the box to give Stan the perfect start.
Whitley’s opening two league fixtures had produced a 7-7 aggregate score but this was a much tighter affair, the visitors standing firm against home pressure.
