Former England international striker David Nugent is back in the game – and back on the pitch – after joining Anstey Nomads as player-coach.
The Northern Premier League Division One Midlands outfit have pulled off a major coup with the addition of former Leicester City, Preston North End and Derby County striker David Nugent, who last featured for Tranmere Rovers in 2021.
Nugent brings a wealth of experience to Cropston Road, having made over 600 appearances across the Premier League and EFL, netting 162 goals.
He also earned a memorable England cap in 2007 – marking the occasion with a goal on his debut in a 3-0 victory against Andorra.

New challenge
His brief England career remains the shortest of any player to have scored for the Three Lions.
At 40-years-old, Nugent takes on a new challenge with the Nomads, who announced the news via their social media platforms.
The club confirmed that he would be available for their fixture this Saturday against Loughborough Students, adding: “Join us tomorrow for a 3:00PM KO at Cropston Road!”

National League transfer news
Elsewhere in Non-League, there’s been plenty of movement among National League clubs today.
Forest Green Rovers have strengthened their attack with the signing of forward Temi Babalola from Worthing for an undisclosed fee.
The 24-year-old, who played against Robbie Savage’s side in Monday’s 4-1 FA Cup defeat, now makes the step up a division.
Wealdstone have also been active, bringing in Terrell Agyemang on an initial one-month loan from fellow National League outfit Morecambe.
The midfielder only joined the Shrimps in August but heads south in search of regular minutes.
Meanwhile, Aldershot Town have re-signed Will Armitage on loan from Southampton – a familiar face who helped the Shots lift the Isuzu FA Trophy just five months ago.
The defender returns to the Recreation Ground after a short spell with Brackley Town, where he made four appearances. The Shots have further bolstered their ranks with the loan capture of Ciaran Gilligan from Burton Albion.
In the National League North, Macclesfield have completed the signing of Max Woltman on a short-term deal following a successful trial with the club, while Chorley have added Lucas Weaver on loan from National League side Altrincham.
The 23-year-old forward has made nine appearances for Alty so far this season, finding the net once.
Meanwhile, in the National League South, Worthing have announced the return of goalkeeper Josh Jeffries on loan from Southampton until January.
The 20-year-old previously enjoyed a brief spell with the Rebels in 2024 before injury cut that stint short.
He now becomes returning manager Adam Hinshelwood’s first signing, rejoining the club at the same time as his former boss.
