Outgoing manager Jay Bates hailed his Whitley Bay heroes as they rounded off his managerial reign by lifting the Northumberland Senior Cup with a penalty shoot-out win against Northern Premier League East club Heaton Stannington.
The two sides could not be separated over 90 minutes as Whitley substitute and former Newcastle United academy forward Nathan Nkunku cancelled out an opener from Stan midfielder Alex Payne during a lively opening to the second half.
Chances came and went for both sides during the remaining half-hour, but it was the lottery of penalties that would decide the fate of the Senior Cup.
With the scores level at six apiece, Whitley captain Michael Scott found the net and that put the pressure on Joe Robson to follow suit – but he was denied by the goalkeeper as the Bay lifted the trophy for the first time since 2010.

‘Something of a dream’
More poignantly, it also meant Bates was able to celebrate the end of his two-year managerial reign with silverware after he confirmed he was to step down just days before the St James Park showpiece.
Reflecting on a memorable night at the home of Premier League giants Newcastle United, the Whitley boss said: “It‘s something that you dream of, isn’t it?
“The players to go out on that pitch, with us as managers at St James Park, to finish it, where you want to be as a young kid, it wasn’t bad at all, was it?
“I think on chances created, we both had many chances, I wouldn’t say they overpowered us with chances.
“They caused us a little bit of a problem in possession, but on chances created, it was evening out.
“With Heaton Stannington, they’re a big, physical side. You can tell they’re a level above, the energy levels they’ve got, their physicality compared to us at times, you could see it out there.
“The game could have gone either way, but with penalties it’s a lottery.”

Camaraderie
Bates believes a spirit of togetherness has helped his coaching staff guide their side to success as they have built on the progress they have made at their previous clubs.
When asked to reflect on his managerial career so far, the outgoing Bay boss said: “If you look back at my managerial career, I’ve always done something.
“From Walker Central, we had a couple of cup finals at Seaton Delaval, a couple of cup finals and top of the league.
“West Allotment, we got them promoted and then came to Whitley Bay and we’ve done something again.
“I’m not saying it’s done to me, but we have always tried to instil team camaraderie, like we do in the army, and we try and get that into the lads, the belief, and I think it’s worked.”
