Among the substitutes used during last Saturday’s FA Cup clash between Prescot Cables and visiting North Ferriby was one name not listed on the teamsheet.
However, the home side were grateful to 15-year-old Joe Richards after offering to leave his spot on the terraces at Hope Street to run the line when assistant referee Kieran Chell succumbed to a second-half calf injury with the hosts 4-0 up at the time.
“I’ve known him for ages and had no idea he was a ref!” said Cables director Richard Tigwell. “It took guts to put up his hand when we needed help.”
