Chelmsford boss Mark Cooper hailed Canvey Island goalkeeper David Hughes as “incredible” after his performance almost helped his side block out their Step 2 visitors.
Jack Barham’s goal 19 minutes from time ensured there would be no cupset for the Pitching In Isthmian North Division hosts.
However, Kevin Horlock’s team, playing two divisions below National League South City, pushed them all the way.
