What is the standout tie of the fifth round action?
Chatham’s giant-killing run has captured attention across the Non-League scene. A gutsy performance to knock out Carlisle United in the fourth round showed just how dangerous Kevin Hake’s side can be when they’re firing – and they’ll certainly be brimming with confidence heading into Saturday’s tie.
Southend, a club with bigger resources and a pedigree at higher levels of the football pyramid, are well aware this won’t be a straightforward afternoon.
Gus Scott-Morriss has made it clear that understanding Chatham’s mindset will be crucial.
“They’re going to be full of confidence and right up for it. They’ve got nothing to lose and they’ve played that card,” Scott-Morriss told Southend’s YouTube channel.
“We need to go there and show why we’re a few steps higher than them, but it’s key that we understand that they’re going to be right up for it and we’ve got to match their desire.”
This time last year, the Shrimpers exited the Trophy at the fifth-round stage against lower-league opposition, suffering a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Sittingbourne.
The goalscoring wing-back made it clear that experience will not weigh heavily on preparations this time around, insisting the focus remains firmly on progressing in the competition.
“I think as a professional, you’re going to have ups and downs in your career as a team,” he added. “I don’t necessarily say it plays a massive part.
“Obviously, it was a low, don’t get me wrong, every loss is a low and being at home losing to a team a few divisions below is never nice.
“But we’ve done it to other teams ourselves. So it happens all kind of year round. So it is a motivation, but at the same time, it’s more of a motivation for us to get through to the next round.”
