BOB ‘The Cat’ Bevan brought the curtain down on a very interesting series last week and hit the nail right on the head when talking about the good old amateur days and today’s professionalism in Non-League football.
I first came across Bob when he was working for shipping line Townsend Thoresen at Felixstowe, Suffolk, and was also beginning to make a name as an after-dinner speaker.
In those days, I was a sport writer with the East Anglian Daily Times Evening Star and I met Bob entertaining the punters at testimonial dinners for Ipswich Town players.
