■ SUTTON took the spoils at Coles Lane, thanks to a Curvin Ellis header on the stroke of half-time.
Stamford almost took the lead when Sutton failed to clear and a snap shot hit a post before the Sutton defence cleared.
Sutton hit back and Stamford conceded a foul on the edge of the box but Jack Burgess fired over.
Stamford had the best of the chances in the first half, but Sutton took the lead with a breakaway that ended with Ellis stooping to head home a perfect cross from the left.
