Gus Scott-Morriss says Southend United will always hold a special place in his heart.
The 29-year-old was out of contract at Roots Hall this summer and has now joined League Two Oldham Athletic on a two-year deal.
Scott-Morriss has been one of the National League’s top performers, with 32 goals in the last two seasons from right wing-back.
Fittingly, he signed off his Shrimpers career by firing in the winning penalty to secure Isuzu FA Trophy glory at Wembley a fortnight ago.
“Where do I begin… a crazy journey from start to finish,” the former Royston Town, Hemel Hempstead and England C star posted on social media.
“One I could never have dreamt of when first signing for the Shrimpers. I want to say a big thanks to the management for giving me my first opportunity in
full-time football, when I thought that chance probably wouldn’t come.
“To the lads who stuck together through thick and thin in the darkest of times, from not getting paid to lifting silverware together at Wembley. Brothers I will never forget.
“And last of all thank you to the fans! You welcomed me in from day one and made me feel like one of your own. I’ll forever be grateful for this and will never forget.”
Southend skipper Nathan Ralph has also left the Shrimpers, who are without a manager following the axing of Kevin Maher just 48 hours after winning the Trophy. Chelmsford City are thought to be interested.
Meanwhile, keeper Collin Andeng-Ndi – who saved two penalties in the shoot-out against Wealdstone – is also attracting interest from elsewhere.
