Dannks for everything!

Southport co-owners Dave Cunningham and Kieran Malone say Neil Danns leaves with their ‘genuine thanks’.

Southport co-owners Dave Cunningham and Kieran Malone say Neil Danns leaves with their ‘genuine thanks’.

The 43-year-old former Birmingham City, Crystal Palace and Leicester attacker stood down following the Sandgrounders’ 2-0 defeat at Spalding United.

It left them third bottom of the early standings with just one win and two draws from their opening seven National League North games.

Former Guyana international Danns took over in May 2025 after joining from Tranmere Rovers where he had been assistant to Nigel Adkins in League Two.

“We are incredibly grateful for everything Neil has given us and, on a personal level, for the way he has conducted himself throughout his time here. “He leaves the managerial role with our genuine thanks, affection and respect and will always be very welcome at Southport Football Club.” Mark Duffy took charge of Tuesday night’s 2-1 win over Morecambe – a result which moved the Sandgrounders out of the relegation zone.

And last season the former Macclesfield player-boss guided Port past National League duo Eastleigh and Yeovil Town as they reached the FA Trophy semi-finals – where they lost narrowly to Southend United – as well as a 14th-place finish in the table

. But a slow start this season prompted Danns to step aside. In a statement, Cunningham and Malone said: “Neil will continue to support the club in the short term as we manage the transition and con-

sider the next steps for the first team. “Neil has given an enormous amount to Southport and this club has meant a great deal to him. “Throughout his time as manager, he has represented Southport with dignity, care and a genuine desire to move the club forward.

“He has built real relationships with the players, staff and supporters and has always wanted the very best for everyone connected with the club.
