After a five-match winless run, Chester can be content to reach the next round courtesy of Ruben Butt’s double.
The winger, loaned from Salford, marked his full debut by scoring a decisive late goal to spare the National League North visitors a replay.
While Blues fans will be happy with the teenager’s impact, they would have been grateful to goalkeeper Luke Hewitson too after his stunning save – diving to his left to tip over Jak McCourt’s deflected shot – denied Lower Breck a second equaliser with time running out.
