CORBY TOWN have parted company with manager Tommy Wright following Saturday’s defeat to Ilkeston, with the club saying they don’t want to be in another relegation battle.

The 2-1 home reverse in the Evo-Stik NPL Premier, the club’s fourth defeat in a row, was the end of the road for the former Leicester, Barnsley and Darlington striker.

He joined the Steelmen in September 2013 as joint-manager alongside Andrew Wilson before being left in sole charge in May 2014.

Corby won the Southern League Premier in Wright’s first season in charge, pipping Poole Town to the title on the final day of the 2014-15 season.

However, they found life in the National League North difficult and they suffered relegation straight back to Step 3 at the end of last season.

Wright, who also served as academy manager, was confident heading into the season, implementing a move to daytime training and going with a younger, hungrier squad.

But the Steelmen have started the Evo-Stik NPL Premier slowly and have won just one of their 12 league games so far this term, sitting second bottom of the table.

Wrigh’s assistant Eddie Johnson will take charge of Monday night’s trip to Hednesford Town while Corby search for a permanent successor.

A club statement read: “Corby Town Football Club have parted company with first team and academy manager Tommy Wright this evening.

“We would like to thank Tommy for his commitment during his time at Steel Park. He has been a great servant to the club and this decision has been made with a heavy heart.

“We will always remember winning the Southern League in Tommy’s first season in sole-charge and his work with the academy and the local community have been excellent.

“Sadly the performance of the first team has not been good enough however. Tommy told us to give him ten games and the time has now come to part company.

“The fans have been extremely loyal and have stood by the club despite the poor results and we do not want to be involved in another relegation battle this season.

“We need to start getting results and will be looking to bring somebody in who can deliver those results and move us up the table. We wish Tommy the best of luck in his future career.”
