Carlisle United strengthened their grip on third place in the National League as Boreham Wood were held by Woking, while relegation-threatened Sutton United and Eastleigh both secured dramatic late wins.

The Cumbrians cruised past Aldershot Town to increase their gap over Wood to four points, as Luke Garrard’s men were held by the Cards despite a late equaliser.

Elsewhere, the relegation battle took another twist as Sutton saw off play-off hopefuls Scunthorpe, while the Spitfires emerged victorious in a crucial six-pointer against Brackley Town.

Here is a full roundup of the midweek National League action.

Aldershot Town 0-2 Carlisle United

Carlisle maintained their promotion push with a 2-0 victory at Aldershot in the National League.

Goals from Morgan Feeney and Harvey Macadam helped the Cumbrians register a fifth win in seven games, condemning Aldershot to a third straight loss in the process.

Home goalkeeper Coniah Boyce-Clarke made a brilliant save to deny Regan Linney before Carlisle took the lead just past the half-hour mark, Feeney pouncing from Chris Conn-Clarke’s cross.

The visitors doubled their advantage two minutes before half-time when Macadam headed home Conn-Clarke’s free-kick from close range.

Scunthorpe United 1-2 Sutton United

Brandon Njoku struck a stoppage-time winner as Sutton boosted their National League survival hopes with a 2-1 win at Scunthorpe.

Njoku nodded in a cross from fellow substitute David Ogbonna to help Sutton move nine points clear of the relegation zone.

Connor Smith missed a glorious chance for Scunthorpe on the stroke of half-time and was punished when Osman Foyo tapped in the rebound after goalkeeper Louis Jones had denied Jermaine Francis five minutes into the second half.

Sutton, thrashed 5-0 at home by Morecambe at the weekend, saw their lead last just two minutes as Danny Whitehall notched his 18th goal of the season – and seventh in as many games – following a scramble from a corner.

But Njoku had the final say to leave stuttering sixth-placed Scunthorpe with just one win in eight games.

Eastleigh 2-1 Brackley Town

Aaron Blair netted a stoppage-time winner to earn Eastleigh a 2-1 home victory over fellow National League strugglers Brackley.

The Spitfires’ top scorer poked the ball home in the fourth minute of time added on to help his side move nine points clear of the relegation zone while condemning 20th-placed Brackley to a sixth successive loss.

Eastleigh took the lead in the 21st minute when Blair grabbed his 14th of the season, firing home from Temitope Eweka’s ball into the area.

Tahvon Campbell, who joined hours before the game on loan from Yeovil for the rest of the season, levelled eight minutes before the break for Brackley, for whom captain Gareth Dean set a new club record by making his 439th appearance.

Southend United 1-1 Gateshead

Struggling Gateshead earned a 1-1 draw, which did nothing for Southend United’s play-off hopes.

Andrew Dallas brilliantly gave Southend a 21st-minute lead, running on to Harry Boyes’ long pass and lobbing goalkeeper Adam Desbois first time from the corner of the penalty area.

Charley Kendall missed a good chance to make it two, and Oliver Coker went close on three occasions, but Gateshead equalised on the stroke of half-time when Brad Nicholson headed in Keaton Ward’s corner.

Kendall shot just wide late on, but despite two late Gateshead penalty appeals being turned down, the 19 travelling fans were left to celebrate a point.

Woking 2-2 Boreham Wood

Matt Rush grabbed an equaliser deep into injury time as 10-man Boreham Wood battled back to claim a 2-2 draw against Woking in the National League.

Rush had opened the scoring for the visitors in the 22nd minute, but Wood’s promotion hopes looked set to take a hit after Marley Marshall-Miranda was sent off on the half-hour mark.

Woking looked to capitalise with Chinwike Okoli striking the woodwork twice in quick succession before Tim Akinola finally levelled 10 minutes into the second half.

Boreham Wood keeper Ted Curd denied Harry Beautyman, but Aaron Drewe finally poked Woking in front in the 81st minute, and it looked to be enough until Rush took his chance six minutes into added time.

Wealdstone 3-2 Tamworth

Micah Obiero pounced in the 68th minute to seal a 3-2 win for Wealdstone over fading Tamworth at Grosvenor Vale.

The visitors went into the game on the back of two straight losses but saw their flickering play-off hopes boosted by Stefan Mols’ 22nd-minute header to open the scoring.

Dylan Kadji levelled for the 16th-placed Stones, but Tamworth restored their advantage just past the half-hour mark when Ben Acquaye volleyed home with the help of a slight deflection.

An entertaining first period ended level when Sean Jordan Adarkwa tapped home from close range shortly before the interval.

And after Adarkwa had missed a golden chance to grab his second, he turned provider with a powerful effort that was spilled by Tamworth keeper Jas Singh and Obiero had the simple task of firing home to seal the points.
