Jermain Defoe leaves Woking as manager after just 116 days in charge

Jermain Defoe has left Woking by mutual consent after revealing “circumstances have ultimately made it impossible” for him to continue as manager.

The former England, Tottenham Hotspur and Sunderland striker departs just 116 days after taking charge at the Laithwaite Community Stadium and just less than four months after beginning his first permanent managerial role.

Woking confirmed the news in a brief statement, thanking Defoe for his contribution and wishing him every success in the future while insisting the club remained focused on its objectives ahead of the new National League campaign.

The 43-year-old later issued his own statement on social media, hinting at issues behind the scenes but stopping short of revealing the specific circumstances behind his departure.

Circumstances

He said: “Following recent discussions, I can confirm that I have mutually agreed to leave my position as manager of Woking FC.

“Unfortunately, circumstances have ultimately made it impossible for me to continue in the position.

“I am extremely proud of the work undertaken during my time at the club and genuinely felt that we were building something special.”

He added: “I would like to thank Todd Johnson for giving me the opportunity to manage the club.

“I am incredibly grateful to the supporters and, most importantly, the players, who I am genuinely gutted for.

“The group is a fantastic one, and I wish the squad every success for the season ahead.

“Really disappointed the journey has ended so soon, but I leave with great pride in what Paul Bracewell, Karl Halabi and I were building at the club.

“My time at Woking FC has been an eye-opening managerial experience and one that will undoubtedly make me stronger for the next challenge in my career.”

Disagreement

Defoe was appointed by the Cards in March after previous coaching spells at Rangers and Tottenham Hotspur.

He took charge of the final six matches of last season as Woking finished 10th in the National League.

He oversaw two wins, three draws and one defeat before leading the club through pre-season.

However, with just over two weeks until the start of the 2026/27 National League campaign, Woking must now begin the search for a new manager.

Reports have suggested Defoe’s departure came after a disagreement with a member of the club’s hierarchy.

Woking kick off their National League campaign at home to Sutton United on Saturday, August 8.
